Description
Half pound Turritella Jasper tumbled stone.
Turritella jasper is a translucent, brown stone made of fossilized snails that have been replaced by silica:
Composition
Turritella jasper is a type of chalcedony, which is a family of minerals that can also be sold as agate or jasper. Jasper is typically opaque and has a solid color or an irregular pattern of colors.
Origin
Turritella jasper is found in the Green River Formation of Wyoming, USA. The fossils are from the Miocene Epoch, about 24 million years old.
Formation
The shells were deposited in shallow lakes and covered by sea sediment, eventually becoming fossil beds.
Name
The stone is often called Turritella Agate, but this is actually incorrect. The snails in the stone are actually called Elimia tenera, a member of the Pleuroceridae family.
Turritella Agate is a spiritual crystal, deeply connected to the earth and home, to one’s personal roots and ancestry, even the events of one’s past. It is a survival stone, one of strength and protection. Ancient life held within its form lends the power of wisdom and healing.
